DataMesh overview

DataMesh provides a way to automatically copy and paste data to ensure consistency among one-to-many relationships.

Who can use this?

Plans:

  • Smartsheet Advance Package

DataMesh is a premium app that maps your Smartsheet data across multiple sheets and reports, eliminating typos, duplicative data entry, and unnecessary work.

If you have DataMesh by Smartsheet on your plan, it appears in your Launcher after you first sign in at datamesh.smartsheet.com.

In Smartsheet University, you can find this information with click-through instructions in the DataMesh course.

Overview

With DataMesh, you can:

  • Automatically find and remove duplicates

  • Create links between sheets based on lookup values that you specify

  • Automatically populate empty cells in a sheet, based on a known lookup value in another sheet.

    • For example, if you have a source sheet that contains phone numbers for a list of people, you could use DataMesh to update a different sheet with those same phone numbers.

Some examples of DataMesh use cases are:

  • Project Planning: Pull cost information from a rate table into your projects.

  • Property Management: Ensure all address and location-specific data is consistent.

  • Human Resources: Keep employee information current across multiple sheets.

Terms to know

  • Source: This is where the information is being mapped from. For example, a master list of employee information with employee codes, roles, and bill rates.
  • Target: This is where the information is being mapped to. For example, if you had a project plan and wanted to pull up-to-date bill rates for resources, you could pull bill rates from the source (employee information sheet) to the target (project plan).
  • Lookup Values: Lookup Values are unique IDs that shouldn’t repeat within your source. For example, employees might identify by their Employee ID number, which shouldn’t be repeated in the selected Lookup Value Column. Other examples of Lookup Values might be part numbers or student ID numbers.

You need Viewer permissions or higher on any source sheet and Admin permissions or higher on any target sheet to create a DataMesh.
